Thousands of Runners Gear Up for 35th Annual Groundhog Run

Underground run at Hunt Midwest SubTropolis includes high school running teams

January 24, 2017 — Kansas City, Mo. — Join us Sunday, January 29th for the 35th annual Groundhog Run benefiting Children’s Therapeutic Learning Center. Thousands of runners will comfortably make their way through the paved, brightly lit roadways of SubTropolis in the nation’s only sanctioned indoor race run totally underground.

Nestled beneath 150 feet of Missouri limestone along I-435, SubTropolis is the world’s largest underground business complex and offers runners respite from harsh winter weather with a year-round, climate-controlled, 70-degree environment.

The Groundhog Run is the largest fundraiser for Children’s Therapeutic Learning Center (Children’s TLC), with proceeds providing early education and therapy services to hundreds of Kansas City-area children with special needs and their families. One of the longest standing runs in Kansas City, the Groundhog Run has raised more than $4.65 million since its inception in 1982. Special thanks to Groundhog Run 2017 co-chairs Sarah Pence Bloss and Keith Pence.

The 2017 Groundhog Run features a 5K and 10K race in waved starts and for the first time will include running teams from high schools. First, second and third place winners in each age group will receive plaques rather than medals. Races are sanctioned by KC Running Company.
