Kansas City, MO — September 2, 2025 — Catch a behind-the-scenes look at SubTropolis in the new ESPN Original Series The Kingdom as part of the docuseries’ exploration of the Kansas City Chiefs’ extraordinary 2024 season and rich history.
The six-episode series, which premiered last month, features Chiefs leadership and players exploring the world’s largest underground business complex and diving into the team’s private archives stored securely inside SubTropolis.
Exclusive images and artifacts from the SubTropolis archives help tell the team’s 65-year history from Dallas, Texas, to Kansas City and chart the rise of visionary sports and business innovator Lamar Hunt that would forever change the landscape of professional sports worldwide.
Hunt moved his football team to Kansas City in 1963 and, after winning Super Bowl IV over the Minnesota Vikings, announced that he would reinvest in the community that graciously supported his young team. Those investments included new real estate, mining, entertainment, and philanthropic ventures that are still intertwined in the fabric of Kansas City today.
Among those ventures was perhaps Hunt’s most unique business idea: SubTropolis, an ambitious project to reclaim lateral limestone mining space for millions of square feet of warehouse and distribution buildings. The first tenants included Ford Motor Company, Pillsbury, and Russell Stover.
“We’re fiercely proud to be part of Lamar Hunt’s legacy and The Kingdom does an incredible job of capturing his vision, both on and off the football field,” Hunt Midwest President & CEO Ora Reynolds said. “It was so much fun to bring Coach Reid, Patrick, Travis, and Chris down to experience SubTropolis for themselves and to relive some of their own historic moments in the Chiefs archives. It’s so special to be able to share a part of our Hunt Midwest story with the world through the new series.”
Today, SubTropolis has far exceeded even Lamar Hunt’s grand vision, boasting more than 9 million square feet of leasable space with plans to expand to 14 million square feet at full buildout. The limestone structure helps naturally hold the temperature at about 70 degrees year-round, making the developed underground space extremely energy efficient and well-suited to meet the strictest temperature and humidity control requirements.
Those environmental advantages have attracted almost 2 million square feet of stamp, paper, film, art, and other sensitive materials storage tenants to SubTropolis – including the Chiefs’ archive of iconic memorabilia and records dating back to the earliest days of the team, the American Football League, its merger with the National Football League, and more.
In addition to SubTropolis, the Hunt family expanded its real estate development efforts through Hunt Midwest over six decades to include surface industrial development, master-planned new home communities, multifamily developments, senior living, data centers, and climate-controlled self-storage facilities. Hunt Midwest now has more than $3 billion of developed projects across eight states.
Alongside the Kansas City Chiefs, Hunt Midwest and SubTropolis remain pillars of the Lamar Hunt Family holdings, which also include interests in real estate, sports, entertainment, energy, and private equity.
“This series is a tribute to everyone who has helped shape the Kansas City Chiefs over the past six decades — from my father’s vision to the players and coaches who pursue greatness each season,” said Kansas City Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt. “We were proud to open our doors to share the full scope of what Chiefs Kingdom means, on the field and beyond. We hope fans walk away with an even deeper appreciation for the people, the passion, and the purpose that drive our organization.”
All six episodes of The Kingdom are now available to stream online through ESPN and Disney+. The show was produced by Words + Pictures in association Skydance Sports, NFL Films, 2PM Productions, and Foolish Club Studios.
