Jon Birkel is responsible for project management and development of new residential products in Kansas City and in new markets across the country, including new home communities, multifamily developments, and assisted living and memory care senior housing projects. 

Jon has more than three decades of experience in architecture and design, planning, and urban redevelopment, including more than 10 years with Hunt Midwest. He helps design and develop Hunt Midwest’s new residential communities, from initial platting to working with homebuilders throughout construction to turning over finished communities to residents. He played a key role in the design of The Hudson, a 226-unit apartment community scheduled to open in 2025, and The Vue in downtown Overland Park, which won a 2020 Capstone Award for top multifamily development from the Kansas City Business Journal. He also works with Hunt Midwest’s senior living partners to develop and expand the company’s assisted living and memory care residences in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Tennessee, and Florida. 

Jon is a member of the Mid-America Regional Council’s Board of Sustainable Places Policy Committee, the Prairie Village planning commission, and currently chairs the Prairie Village zoning board of appeals. He previously taught urban planning and design as an adjunct professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and served two years on the board of InterUrban ArtHouse, a nonprofit devoted to providing studio space and resources to Kansas City artists. 

Jon earned a bachelor’s degree from the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning and Design. He is a longtime youth lacrosse coach and lives with his family in Prairie Village, Kansas.
